NIAGARA, N.Y. -- The Adrian College WD1 hockey team hit the road Saturday and Sunday for a two-game non-conference series against No. 9 Niagara University. The Bulldogs got shutout 3-0 Saturday evening to the Purple Eagles and bounced back Sunday afternoon, shutting them out 3-0.
The No. 7 Bulldogs were held scoreless in a 3–0 loss to No. 9 Niagara in the opening game of the weekend series. After a scoreless first period, Niagara broke through early in the second, scoring a power-play goal at the 2:19 mark to take a 1–0 lead. Adrian pushed back with sustained pressure but was unable to capitalize, as the game remained a one-goal contest heading into the third. Niagara added insurance with two third-period goals at 4:58 and 10:05 to seal the win. Adrian finished with 30 shots on goal, matching Niagara's total, but could not find the back of the net. Graduate student Riely Jessie-Gerelli made 27 saves in goal for the Bulldogs.
Adrian responded in emphatic fashion in game two, shutting out Niagara 3–0 to earn a series split. The Bulldogs struck first at the 4:00 mark of the opening period when senior Genessie Williams finished a play set up by senior Ava Seychel to give Adrian an early lead. Adrian continued to dictate the pace and carried the 1–0 advantage into the second. Adrian extended the lead midway through the second period as senior Tyla Turnbull scored at 11:40, followed by a goal from junior Sophie Kuzminski at 14:28 to make it 3–0. The Bulldogs defense locked things down the rest of the way, holding Niagara scoreless in the third. Jessie-Gerelli was stellar between the pipes, stopping all 37 shots she faced to earn the shutout. Adrian outshot Niagara 40–37 and killed off all penalties to secure the bounce-back victory.
The WD1 Bulldogs head into the holiday break with a 14-8-2 overall record, while holding an 8-1 conference record. They will be back in action January 23rd and 24th against Michigan-Dearborn, on the road Friday and at home Saturday.
