ADRIAN, Mich. - At the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center, the Adrian men's volleyball team won the first set against Aquinas College, but the visiting Saints rallied off the next three to defeat the Bulldogs (4-14, 1-2 MCVL) in four sets.
Despite besting their opposition in total kills, the black and gold were beaten in overall attacking percentage 0.217 to 0.164. A bulk of that different came over the contest's final two sets, in which the 'Dogs committed 19 errors to the Saints' seven.
In the opening set, kills from Tedrick and
Branden Gula and
Andrew Gawrisch helped push Adrian out to an early 4-2 lead. A subsequent counter from Aquinas threw both sides into a back-and-forth tizzy until a 4-0 run by the Saints put them ahead by two points, 13-11. The visitor's advantage steadily grew up to as many as nine points from there, however, a 5-1 stretch by the Bulldogs, capitalized by a
Brandon Ravelo kill, drew them level at 20-20. Then the race was on, as both sides did everything they could to get a leg up. With the Saints facing set-point, the 'Dogs quickly turned the tables and rifled off three-straight points to steal the first frame, 28-26.
Tedrick Gula notched two of those final three points for Adrian, recording a kill and a set-clinching service ace.
In the following set, the Bulldogs, again, fought off a set-point opportunity for Aquinas, but the Saints did not falter this time around, taking the second, 25-23.
Then, in the match-shifting third set, the visitors battled back from a 21-19 deficit with a 6-0 run to move ahead two sets to one, ultimately keeping their foot on the gas heading into the fourth frame and coming away with the match.
Chase Heuer led Adrian with 18 kills, followed by
Tedrick Gula with 12, and Gawrisch with 11.
Ravelo turned in a match-high 42 assists, nearly out-numbering the entire Saints line-up.
Defensively,
Tedrick Gula and Gawrisch combined for 22 digs.
The Bulldogs face a quick turnaround as they are set to resume conference-play at home against Trine on Thursday evening.
