Baseball Winning Streak Reaches Nine Games After Sweeping Home Twinbill From Trine

ADRIAN, Mich.--The nationally-ranked Adrian College baseball team ran its winning streak to nine games on Friday after opening a four-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association weekend series with doubleheader sweep of visiting Trine University, 3-1 and 15-5.

THE BASICS
= Final Scorelines: Game 1—Adrian 3-8-2, Trine—1-6-1; Game 2—Adrian 15-18-6, Trine 5-9-3

= Records: Adrian Bulldogs, 26-5 overall (20-2 MIAA); Trine Thunder, 17-17 overall (11-11 MIAA)

TOP 'DAWGS
= Senior Hunter Hayes led the offense with a 7-for-9 performance at the plate, recording six runs batted in during the doubleheader.

= Junior Zack Zschering was 5-for-6 with five runs scored, two RBI and three walks on the day.

= Senior Tommy Parsons threw another complete-game victory to improve to 8-0 on the season. He scattered six singles, allowed one run and walked none with 12 strikeouts.

= Sophomore Gunner Rainey had five hits and two RBI in the two games.

= Classmate Pierce Banks (W, 4-2) pitched six effective innings, scattering six hits and three runs (2 earned).

THE OPPOSITION
= Jacob Heller was 3-for-6, including a home run, and four RBI on the afternoon.

= Colton Conn and Kevin O'Malley also had three hits apiece in the two games combined.

HOW IT HAPPENED, Game 1
= Adrian got all the runs it would need in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Frank Resto led off with a double to center field. Two batters later, Zschering doubled to right field for a 1-0 lead. Then Rainey singled home Zschering.

= The teams traded runs in the sixth. Heller singled to shortstop with the bases loaded to get the Thunder on the scoreboard, bringing home Colton Conn who had reached via a fielder's choice. Sophomore Tristin Richardson restored the two-run lead with a RBI-singled up the middle to plate Hayes, who hit a triple off the right-center field wall.

=Trine, in fact, could have had more in its top of the frame. They had a run already in on four hits, but left the bases loaded after Parsons got Thomas Rivet to strike out swinging on a 2-balls, 2-strike count

HOW IT HAPPENED, Game 2
= Adrian scored in each of the first four innings, including five runs in the second. Hayes capped the big frame with a two-run triple to left-center. 

= Trailing 7-0 in the top of the third, Trine got back into the game on Heller's three-run homer to right field.

= The Bulldogs added to their 7-3 advantage in the bottom half, scoring four times. It was Hayes once again who delivered a key hit--a two-run single to center.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Adrian holds a commanding 56-14 lead in the all-time series, including 12 wins in a row over Trine.

= Resto had a sacrifice bunt in the nightcap to give him 26 in a career--tying Tony Vennekotter (2003-06) on the AC all-time chart.

= With 18 hits in the nightcap, Adrian has recorded double-digit hits in 18 games this spring,

= Parsons leads the MIAA in victories (8-0), earned-run average (1.32), strikeouts (87), complete games (7) and innings pitched (68.0).

= Rainey owns an 11-game hitting streak, including three four-hit outings since April 22. He has 95 hits in his 77-game career.

= Hayes' five hits in Game 2 ties an Adrian single-game record. Also, his six RBI is his personal record.

= The Bulldogs are 15-0 at home this season and own a 16-game winning streak at the Nic dating back to 2017.

= Adrian is ranked third in the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Rankings, released today. The national office will conduct two more regional rankings.

= The Bulldogs have extended their MIAA-record 10-consecutive conference championships with today's victories.

UP NEXT
= These same two teams conclude their four-game series in Angola, Ind., on Saturday for a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
