Bulldogs Grind Out Split at Trine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ANGOLA, Ind. – The baseball squad split a doubleheader at Trine University on Saturday at Jannen Field. The first game was highlighted by a 5-2 win for the Bulldogs in which senior Eric Schmidt tied the school record with his 27th career win. The second game saw Adrian take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh before the Thunder responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-2 comeback win.

Schmidt completed game one allowing seven hits and two earned runs. He allowed one walk and struck out three. He is now 4-0 with four complete games and a 2.73 earned run average in MIAA games. Adrian got off to a quick start with two runs in the top of the first. Drew Shutes hit his first home run of the season and Jeff Gertley had a single followed by a fielding error by Zach Thorn which scored Ryan Dorow.

Dorow would give his team a 3-0 lead in the top of the third with his sixth home run of the season to straight away center field. Miccoy Drzewiecki had a two-RBI double to left center in the top of the fifth scoring Dorow and Shutes to give Adrian a 5-0 lead. The Thunder scored twice in the bottom of the fifth as Jake Kendall had a two-RBI single.

Andy Farrell took the loss (3-3) throwing six innings and allowing 10 hits and five earned runs for the Thunder. He walked two and struck out four. Dorow finished 2-for-3 with a double and home run and reached a third time with a walk. Shutes went 2-for-4 with a double and home run while scoring twice. Drzewiecki went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. He is hitting a whopping .475 this season to lead the team.

The Thunder scored once in the bottom of the first in game two against Adrian starter Tommy Eng. Drew Palmer had an infield single scoring Ethan Prebynski with the game's first run. A pitcher's duel between Eng and Trine's Jacob Thoma saw no one else score until the seventh inning. Adrian took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run by Gertley. It was his team-leading seventh of the season and tied him for sixth on the single-season list at Adrian.

Eng was taken out of the game entering the bottom of the seventh for freshman Collin Korte. The southpaw could not close the door however. Robert Ross had a one-out double and was lifted for pinch runner Zach Thom. Prebynski delivered the game-tying single and advanced to second on an error by Korte. Kendall was walked intentionally to put runners on first and second. The runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and then Jordan Baer reached on a fielder's choice with Prebynski scoring the winning run.

Adrian is now 22-7 overall and 15-3 in the MIAA. Adrian had just four hits in game two as Dorow went 2-for-3 while scoring on the Gertley home run. Palmer went 2-for-2 for Trine as they managed five hits in the nightcap. Sunday's games at Nicolay Field have been moved up to 11 a.m. due to a threat of afternoon rain.
