Cowart Sets Hits and Steals Record in Sweep at Alma

ALMA, Mich. - He would have loved to do it at home but he will take it regardless as senior Alex Cowart set career marks for hits (203) and stolen bases (52) in a pair of wins at Alma on Saturday. Klenk Park could not slow down the red-hot Adrian (20-7, 14-2) offense as they posted double-digits runs for the fourth straight time and for the seventh time in the last eight MIAA contests.

Adrian won 13-0 in game one and then posted a 14-7 win in game two. Cowart went hitless in game one and then set the record with a one-out single to center in the third inning of game two. He got his record-setting steal at second base in the sixth inning of game one.

Freshman southpaw Andrew Geese was the story of game one for the Bulldogs. He got his second start of the season and threw the shutout going the distance. Geese allowed three hits including just one double by Tyler Periard. He walked three and struck out six Scots in a 91-pitch outing. Alma stranded six runners in game one.

Andrew Anderson went 4-for-4 with his eighth double and also scored two runs and drove in three. Nate Sarkissian went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt and scored twice with two RBI's. Steve Vanderheyden continued to be the hottest hitter on the team by going 2-for-4 with two doubles (9,10) and a team-high four RBI's.

The team took a 1-0 lead into the top of the sixth and then scored 10 runs making it the third straight game they had a double-figure scoring inning against the Scots. The Bulldogs sent 14 hitters to the plate in the inning and their 10 runs on just five hits. Alma made four big errors in the inning.

Adrian picked up its 12th straight win and 20th of the season in the nightcap with a 14-7 win. The Bulldogs are now up two games over Hope in the conference standings for first place after the Flying Dutchmen split at Trine on Saturday. Adrian pounded out 17 hits off four Alma hurlers in game two. Jay Sackett took the loss (3-1) going four innings allowing eight hits and six runs of which just three were earned. Adam Rezmer gave up four earned runs in 2.1 relief innings.

The Bulldogs led 3-0 after the first inning as Alma committed three errors in the frame. Adrian built their lead to 8-1 in the middle of the fifth inning but the Scots scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-5. Adrian responded with six runs in the top of the seventh and Alma scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.

David Partyka improved to 5-0 as he took the ball for the first 4.2 innings and allowed seven hits and five earned runs. He walked two and struck out one. Nick Sarkissian and Dan Welch concluded the game on the mound allowing three hits and no earned runs. Sarkissian struck out one and hit a batter. Welch threw the seventh and allowed two hits.

Anderson, Vanderheyden and Cody Meyer each had a triple in game two. Joe Dubina also had a double and walked twice. Meyer finished a great series going 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Vanderheyden went 4-for-5 with a run and three RBI's. Anderson went 2-for-4 with three runs and a pair of RBI's. Bilius was also 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and two RBI's.
