March 15, 2009

Box Score

FRANKLIN, Ind. - The mystery of the 2009 baseball team continued on Sunday. The Bulldogs had scored 29 runs in the past two days but were blanked 3-0 against Ohio Northern falling to 4-5 overall. The Polar Bears split with the Bulldogs after Adrian claimed a 12-1 win yesterday. The pitching duo of Cody Fisher and Brett Katana shut down the Bulldog bats as Adrian collected seven hits but none for extra bases. Fisher (1-0) went six innings and allowed four hits. He had some control troubles with six walks but also had nine punchouts and hit a batter. Katana got his first save of 2009 throwing three innings and walked one with three strikeouts.

Adrian left 12 runners on base including the bases loaded in the first inning. Kris Powell and Alex Cowart drew walks to start the third inning but the next three hitters were sent down including two strikeouts. The Bulldogs left two on base in the sixth inning and Joe Dubina was thrown out at the plate after an Andrew Anderson two-out single to right.

Adrian's last chance in the ninth started with Nate Sarkissian drawing a base on balls. Todd Meyers hit a single through the right side of the infield and put two runners on base with one out. Those runners were stranded after a strikeout and fly out to right. Lost in all of this was a solid outing by Don Schmelter. He threw the first five innings and did not walk a batter. He did allow nine hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts (0-1).

Josh Lancaster went the last three innings and allowed just one hit with one walk and one strikeout. Powell and Cowart each had a pair of singles and Powell reached base four times also drawing two walks. The Bulldogs committed just one error in the ballgame and allowed two runs in the first and one more in the fifth.
